Supporting Beginning Writers Using Labeled Picture Prompts

Writing has always been one of my favorite content areas to teach.  I love seeing my students progress throughout the year. Often they will begin in August only being able to draw pictures and by May, they are writing beautiful stories.  We usually focus on writing personal narratives, but this year I noticed that students were writing the same topic, with the same stories and the same sentences, day after day.  They felt comfortable with the stories they were able to successfully write but were not being challenged or taking risks with their writing.

I created labeled picture writing prompts for these writers.  They are still writing stories but are able to write about different topics that are interesting to them.  The labeled pictures gave them confidence to take risks in their writing and use new vocabulary.
Students are able to use the words in their word bank so they aren't afraid of spelling words wrong.
They are then able to use a rubric with their stories to check sentence conventions.
There are 4 rubrics per page for easy copying. They are very student friendly.  (This rubric is included as a freebie at the end of the post)
Included in the packet are 50 different writing picture prompts.  Each is included with both labeled pictures for students who need more confidence and support in their writing and unlabeled pictures for more proficient writers

(This St. Patrick's Day writing prompts is included as a freebie below)
Included in the packet are variety of different topics included ranging from every day stories, to fantasy and even includes writing prompts for holidays:
